LOS LOCOS - 5 OF THE BEST COSTA BLANCA WALKS & HIKES

25/11/2019

Get your boots (or your walking sandals) on! It's time to explore the Costa Blanca by foot. Walking is one of the very best ways to get an authentic feel for a destination. At your own speed, you can discover a region's sights, landscapes, flora, fauna and hidden gems. With a wonderful climate and varied scenery, the Costa Blanca is a particularly perfect place to explore via walking trails and hiking routes.

From easy afternoon strolls to more challenging hikes, we've collected five of the best Costa Blanca walks. These routes will take you from sandy beaches to waterfalls, mountain peaks, and the battlements of historic castles. Looking for something a little closer to home? Try one of our favourite walks in Torrevieja.

Guardamar Sand Dunes

Guardamar Sand Dunes

Location: 1 hour 10 minute drive from Torrevieja

Distance: Self-directed

Difficulty: Easy

The golden sand dunes of Guardamar stretch for 10km along the Costa Blanca coastline.

Walkers seeking sea air and a gentle, self-directed stroll should make a beeline for this beautiful destination.

Make sure you include the Alfonso Park in your walking route, which is home to a sprawling, peaceful pine forest. La Babilonia beach (Guardamar's central beach) is another great stop on your route; here the shore is lined with charming, tiled fishermen's cottages.

Les Planises from Jalon

Les Planises from JalonLocation: 1 hour 40 minute drive from Torrevieja

Distance: 13km

Elevation: 450m

Difficulty: Medium

The stunning Jalon valley is well worth a visit  for walkers and hikers of all abilities. This verdant valley is teeming with nature, and walkers can enjoy gorgeous strolls through olive, almond, and orange groves. Visit in February to make the most of the almond blossom which blooms across the valley. Peppered with charming villages, this area of the Costa Blanca is perfect for a day trip.

The area's website recommends a range of hikes, which are well-signposted and well-trodden. This alternative hiking trail is ideal for hikers looking for a morning or afternoon of rugged walking. The route includes some challenges, including some rocky portions, interspersed with a number of well-made paths.

Serrella Castle

Serrella CastleLocation: Guadalest, 1 hour 45 minute drive from Torrevieja

Distance: 6.26 miles

Difficulty: Challenging

Elevation: 3,304 ft

Perched on top of the rocky outcrop of Penya del Castellet on the cusp of the beautiful Sierra Serella, Serrella Castle offers walkers breathtaking views, fascinating history and a variety of routes to navigate.

For walkers interested in a challenging hike, this route will take you from the base of the outcrop, all the way up to the ruins of the Castle itself. Be aware that this route includes lots of steep ascents and descents. Walkers will need to navigate across rugged terrain at some points, as paths are not always clear or well marked. Views over the winding canal and the countryside below make this adventurous scramble well worth it.

Those looking for an easy walk can drive up the steep, well-maintained winding path to Guadalest / Castell de Castells, before embarking on a gentler exploration of the outcrop and castle (this should take around two hours at a leisurely pace - perfect at sunset).

Fonts de Algar Circuit

Fonts de Algar CircuitLocation: 1 hour 45 minute drive from Torrevieja

Distance: 12km

Difficulty: Easy

Elevation: 445m

The sparkling waterfalls of Algar make for a magical day trip, located around 35 minutes' drive north of Benidorm. While you're in the area, don't miss the opportunity to take this scenic 12km walk. The scenery on this relatively flat walking route is not to be missed. Skirting the valley beneath Penya Severino, the path passes charming ruins and crosses beautiful groves of almond and orange trees. We recommend planning a morning hike, then taking a dip in the nearby waterfalls to cool off. The walk can be shortened by driving a little further up the route, if you're seeking a shorter stroll.

Olta Summit & Circuit

Olta Summit & CircuitLocation: Near Calpe, 1 hour 40 minute drive from Torrevieja

Distance: 10km

Difficulty: Medium

Elevation: 490m

In the mood to conquer a climb? Sierra Olta is a tall hunk of rock which sits proudly in the midst of sweeping coastal scenery. To the north west, walkers can see the towering Sierra Bernia, while the coast of Benidorm lies to the east. This walk is relatively steep, but achievable; ideal for walkers looking for a medium challenge. A popular walking spot, routes around and up Sierra Olta are well-trodden and well-signposted. Don't forget to wear sturdy boots, however, to protect your ankles from sharp rocks. Follow a signposted route or use these helpful directions to reach the summit.
